 Jonathan
is the author of many books, including Confucius: A Biography,
The Moon in the Pines, and the historical blockbuster Pirate
King. Not even he is sure how many languages he speaks, but
his work with Noise Monster has forced him to acquire a
working knowledge of three Martian dialects.
Described by the Sunday
Times as ‘the medium’s most sought-after translator,’
he prepared the English-language versions of over 70 Japanese
animated films and videos, including Plastic Little, Ushio
& Tora, Hummingbirds, Slow Step, Sol
Bianca, Ironfist Chinmi and Grey: Digital Target.
He was a translator on the BBC’s Godzilla: King of the
Monsters, and directed voices on everything from anime to
computer games, most recently I Love Judge Dredd, broadcast
online by the BBC.
He has worked as a scenarist,
storyliner and scriptwriter for television, film, and games from
Nanoworld to Halcyon Sun. He was a presenter on
the Sci Fi channel’s Saiko Exciting series, curator
of Chinese animation at the Udine Film Festival, and a consultant
on the BBC series Japanorama. He has recorded several DVD
commentaries, and writes regular columns for Newtype USA
and the Judge Dredd Megazine.
He has worked for Big Finish
Productions in a number of capacities, chiefly as the author of
the company’s acclaimed Strontium Dog dramas, starring
Simon Pegg as Johnny Alpha, but also on Judge Dredd, Doctor
Who Unbound, and the Doctor Who spin-off series, UNIT.
His acting roles have included a Chinese stealth bomber pilot,
a Japanese robot beacon, and an underrated Albanian-language performance
as a Kosovan cockle-picker being eaten alive by an invisible vampire.
